Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was formerly known as the Williams Air Force Base, is a commercial airport found on the southeastern part of Mesa City in Arizona, and is about 20 miles or 32kilometers from Phoenix in United States Maricopa County in Arizona. The airport is under the ownership and operation of the Williams Gateway Airport Authority and serves as the Allegiant Air hub. The airport authority is under the government of a five-member board that is composed of a tribal governor of Gilbert town and mayors of the city of Mesa, Queen Creek town, and Gila River Indian Community plus Phoenix city.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was constructed in 1941 and the inauguration was in 1942 through the US military and as Williams Airbase. The airport was serving as a flight field training for military pilots in the Second World War. The military forces were able to establish a pilot school, while many classical airplanes were on the airfield in a daily basis.
In 1991, the commission, Base Realignment and Closure or BRAC did recommend the closure of the base as the operating cost were vast for the US government, and it continues operating until 1993. Charter airline Ryan International Airlines Started providing jet flights, MD-82, from the airport too Bullhead City International Airport in the City of Bullhead in Arizona that is adjacent to the resort, Laughlin in Nevada and many more. Of late, the airport has become a flight-training center. There are larger flight schools, which are now taking an advantage of the wonderful flying weather found In the Phoenix Valley.
